Folate – also known as Vitamin B9 is a B vitamin which is found naturally in many foods such as dark green leafy vegetables, cooked and dried beans and spinach. Many processed foods are also fortified with folate.
Folate is needed to make DNA and other genetic material and also cell division which are especially important for pregnant women who require increased amounts.
Folate is important for tissue and cellular repair.
Folate is necessary for methylation.
Red blood cell folate is thought to be a better way of testing folate levels than serum levels and reflects folate stores and turnover over the last 3-4 months
Age range this test is suitable for
Suitable for Adults 18 +.
Not suitable for children below 2 years old. Children 2 – 18 years old if you are attending the lab in London for the blood draw a Dr’s letter of consent is required for children aged 2 – 10 years old.
A blood sample is required. You can attend the laboratory in London to have this taken or receive a test kit for which you will need to arrange a blood sample and return your sample to the lab by a next day delivery.
