Candida is a yeast that is part of our digestive flora, however in some individuals the natural balance of the gut is disrupted leading to an overgrowth of candida which results in many symptoms ranging from fatigue, bloating, diarrhoea/constipation, muscle aches and headaches, to name but a few.

Common symptoms of Candida include

Toxic by-products released by yeast can set off a multitude of both subtle and overt symptoms. These range from headaches, fatigue, and inability to concentrate, to low sex drive, recurrent vaginitis, skin irritations, and even failing vision as well as the following

  • Foggy head
  • Mood swings
  • Bloating
  • Fungal infections
  • Diarrhoea
  • Constipation
  • Excess wind
  • Aching joints, heavy muscles
  • Recurrent thrush
  • Decreased libido
  • Bladder infections
  • Menstrual complaints

Overgrowth of Candida albicans can be signified by a large number of skin problems. In fact, some experts estimate that 15% of patients with Candida overgrowth have some type of skin problem e.g.

  • Dry skin
  • Acne
  • Psoriasis
  • Inflammation
  • Rashes on various parts of the body
  • Atopic dermatitis

Factors that can trigger Candida overgrowth include

  • Use of antibiotics,
  • Use of oral contraceptives
  • Use of steroid medication
  • Stress
  • High sugar diets
  • High starch diets
  • Chlorinated water

What is being measured in the candida test

Blood levels of IgA, IgG & IgM antibodies are reported.

Specimen Requirements

Blood test that requires a blood sample.

You will need to arrange for a blood sample to be collected by a nurse at your G.P. service or at a private clinic or hospital. Any fee for this service is not included in with the test fee.

You will need to send your sample back to the lab via a next day postal service – If you are in the UK, Royal mail offer a suitable next day service. If you are outside of the UK then please check with your postal service for options. The cost of the test does not cover the return postage.

Please note that samples should only be posted on Monday – Thursday so that they do not arrive over the weekend when the lab is closed.

Before Taking the Candida Test

Avoid immuno-suppressive medications for at least one week

Chemotherapy may interfere with test results

The probiotic yeast saccharomyces Boulardii may influence the test results so should be stopped before testing.
