Standard Test for Intestinal Permeability / Leaky Gut

Standard Test for Intestinal Permeability / Leaky Gut

There can be many contributing factors to the cause of Leaky Gut also known as intestinal Permeability and Leaky gut can be responsible for a far reaching range of symptoms.

Zonulin is a protein found in the gastrointestinal tract at the tight junctions  – the gaps between the cells of the intestinal wall. These junctions/gaps  are the area of which the cell membranes are joined together forming a virtually impermeable barrier to fluid.

Zonulin regulates the permeability of the tight junctions/gaps by trafficking the molecules that pass through. The behavior of your immune system is mainly primed in your gut and permeability between the cells of the gut lining  can therefore influence the immune system to misbehave. leaky gut has been shown in many studies to influence immune activity.

The presence of Zonulin can be a useful biomarker in identifying intestinal permeability. For more information on Leaky Gut, please click here.
