Methylation – Essential Nutrients Comprehensive Blood Test

Why Blood Testing Is Essential Alongside Methylation Genetics

Genetic testing offers valuable insight into how someone might process nutrients — but it doesn’t tell us what’s actually happening right now. Genes are like the blueprint or potential, but they don’t operate in isolation. As the saying goes: genetics loads the gun, but the environment pulls the trigger.

Someone may carry a slow MTHFR variant — but are they a 6-foot sumo wrestler with high nutrient demands, or a 4-foot-2, slightly built woman with a minimal intake and lower metabolic needs? A genetic report can’t tell us that. It also doesn’t reveal whether someone is living on fast food or following a nutrient-rich, balanced diet. Genes show us the potential — but they don’t show us the current reality.

That’s why, when it comes to making personalised, effective nutrition decisions — particularly around methylation — it’s essential to combine functional blood testing with genetic results.

When we look at methylation-related genes like MTHFR, MTR, MTRR, COMT, and others, we gain a better understanding of how a person might convert folate, process B12, recycle homocysteine, or clear neurotransmitters. But what we don’t see is:

  • Whether they’re actually getting enough of these nutrients from their diet,
  • Whether absorption is working efficiently, or
  • How lifestyle, stress, inflammation, or medications might be influencing the system.

That’s where blood testing becomes crucial. Measuring markers such as:

  • Red blood cell (Methylated) folate – to understand long-term folate status,
  • Active (Methylated) B12 – to assess bioavailable B12,
  • Homocysteine – to evaluate methylation balance,
  • Plasma B6, zinc, magnesium, and other co-factors – which all support the methylation cycleThis blood test gives a real-time snapshot of what’s actually going on in the body.

Put simply, genetics tells us what the body is capable of, but blood testing shows us what the body is actually doing.

Please note that if you plan to attend the central London lab, you must select the blood draw add-on below. If this is not selected, the kit will be sent to your home and the lab will not be prompted to contact you to arrange your blood draw appointment.

Attending the lab in person

We recommend attending our lab in London because of the time sensitive nature of the samples.

The lab’s location is; 34 Great Titchfield St., London W1W 8BQ

Once the lab have received your order  – via Smart Nutrition, the team at the lab will arrange the appointment for the blood collection with you directly.

The cost of the blood draw is £50 and is paid directly to the lab when you book.

Please note that if you plan to attend the central London lab, you must select the blood draw add-on below. If this is not selected, the kit will be sent to your home and the lab will not be prompted to contact you to arrange your blood draw appointment.

If you cannot attend the lab in London

The red blood cell folate cannot be posted.

The zinc will need to be centrifuged and separated to make it suitable to be posted back.

Homocysteine is time sensitive and needs centrifuging and processing/ separating and posting back straight away.

Next-day delivery postage and packaging is included for all orders that are not attending the lab in central London.

If you cannot attend the lab in person and choose to leave any of the above (such as the folate) out of the panel unfortunately you will still need to pay for the full panel.
