SIBO + Trio-Smart Breath Test for SIBO, IMO & Hydrogen Sulfide – ISO

Every test includes a GP and Functional Medicine Practitioner comment.

The Trio-Smart Breath Test is an at-home diagnostic breath test measuring hydrogen, methane, and hydrogen sulfide gases to identify small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), intestinal methanogenic overgrowth (IMO), and intestinal sulfide overproduction.

If you’re struggling with bloating, gas, nausea, abdominal distention, cramping, abdominal pain, constipation, or diarrhoea, the cause may not be showing up on a standard breath test. Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO), Intestinal Methanogenic Overgrowth (IMO), and Intestinal Sulfide Overproduction (ISO) can all produce very similar symptoms, but each is driven by a different gas – and each needs a different approach to treatment.

The Trio-Smart Breath Test from Smart Nutrition is the only CLIA-certified, at-home breath test that measures all three of the primary gut fermentation gases – hydrogen, methane, and hydrogen sulfide – in a single test. That means a more complete, more precise picture of what’s really going on in your gut, and a clearer starting point for the right treatment plan.

Why Does Hydrogen Sulfide Matter?

Healthcare providers use breath testing to examine fermented gases produced by bacteria and archaea found in your breath when you exhale. Previous breath tests could only measure hydrogen and methane – two out of the three gases that cause symptoms. The previous lack of available testing for hydrogen sulfide allowed some people to slip through the cracks or receive a false negative result.

“It’s estimated that up to 25% of patients who appear normal on hydrogen and methane tests could have elevated hydrogen sulfide levels and associated GI complications,” says Dr. Mark Pimentel, executive director of MAST.

But recent advancements in technology have led to an innovative 3-gas breath test for SIBO, capable of measuring all three primary fermented gases in the gut. A 3-gas breath test measuring hydrogen, methane, and hydrogen sulfide provides a more complete picture of your gut health than other tests.

Hydrogen sulfide SIBO (ISO) is a relatively newly recognised category, and it’s easy to miss. Standard two-gas breath tests are not able to detect it at all, which means a person could have a completely “normal” hydrogen and methane result and still be dealing with an undiagnosed gas-driven cause of their symptoms.

People with hydrogen sulfide-dominant overgrowth often report diarrhoea, unusually sulphurous-smelling gas or stools, and symptoms that persist despite previous SIBO treatment. Because the underlying bacteria – and the treatment approach – differ from hydrogen or methane dominant SIBO, knowing whether hydrogen sulfide is involved is an important piece of the puzzle when building an effective, targeted plan.

Who Should Take the Trio-Smart Breath Test?

The Trio-Smart Breath Test is worth considering if you experience bloating, nausea, gas, abdominal distention, sulhur smelling flatulence or stool, sensitivity to sulphur rich foods,  cramping, abdominal pain, constipation, or diarrhoea,  It’s especially useful if you’ve already had a standard SIBO breath test that came back negative or inconclusive, but your symptoms haven’t gone away – hydrogen sulfide overproduction is often the missing piece in these cases.

Get the fullest picture available of what’s driving your digestive symptoms. With hydrogen, methane, and hydrogen sulfide all measured in a single test, the Trio-Smart Breath Test is the most complete at-home option for investigating SIBO, IMO, and ISO.

At Smart Nutrition we pride ourselves in offering the best cost possible for the Trio Smart SIBO, IMO.& ISO Test

FAQs

Most breath tests only measure two gases: hydrogen and methane. The Trio-Smart test goes further by also detecting hydrogen sulfide, giving you and your practitioner a full picture across all three primary fermentation gases in one sample.

  • Hydrogen (H2) – associated with SIBO, and typically linked to diarrhoea-predominant symptoms.
  • Methane (CH4) – associated with IMO (Intestinal Methanogenic Overgrowth), and typically linked to constipation-predominant symptoms.
  • Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) – associated with ISO (Intestinal Sulfide Overproduction), and often linked to diarrhoea, sulphurous-smelling gas, and symptoms that don’t fully resolve with standard SIBO treatment.

What are the symptoms of hydrogen sulfide SIBO (ISO)?

Common symptoms include diarrhoea, sulphurous (rotten egg-like) smelling gas or stools, bloating, cramping, and abdominal pain. Symptoms can overlap significantly with hydrogen and methane dominant SIBO, which is why breath testing – rather than symptoms alone – is needed to tell them apart

The TrioSmart is a simple at-home breath test.

You will need to collect 9 breath samples over a 2-hour period using the collection bags provided with your kit: the first is a baseline sample, taken before you drink the test solution, and the remaining 8 are collected at 15-minute intervals afterwards.

Before collecting your breath samples, you’ll need to follow a preparation diet and fast overnight – water is allowed. Full instructions will be included with your test kit.

The TrioSmart Breath test is suitiable for:

Adults: Suitable for all adults 18 years or older.

Children: Children need to be competent in blowing into a balloon to ensure the child can safely and accurately collect the breath samples.

Smart nutrition need to know the weight of your child so that we can advise about the correct amount of test solution to drink. Please speak to us or consult your medical professional to discuss a suitable dosage of the solution prior to completing the test. You can contact us via email admin@smartnutrition.co.uk.

The TrioSmart Test includes free pre paid postage for the safe and secure return of your breath samples.

Please post your TrioSmart breath samples within 24 hours of collecting the breath samples

If you collect your samples on a weekend, please post them on the next working day.

Full postage instructions are included with your test kit.

Your TrioSmart Breath test results will be emailed to you within 10-12 working days.

The standard SIBO test measures hydrogen and methane. The Trio-Smart test measures hydrogen, methane, and hydrogen sulfide, so it can identify ISO (hydrogen sulfide-dominant overgrowth) as well as SIBO and IMO – something a standard two-gas test cannot detect.

Yes. A negative hydrogen and methane result doesn’t rule out hydrogen sulfide overproduction. If your symptoms have never been fully explained, or a previous SIBO test came back negative or inconclusive, the Trio-Smart test can uncover a cause that standard testing simply isn’t able

No, the cost of the Trio-Smart Test includes testing only. Because SIBO, IMO and ISO each respond to different treatment approaches, we don’t offer a one-size-fits-all plan. We provide referral options to experienced GP’s Functional Medicine practitioners and nutritional therapists who can build a bespoke treatment plan based on your specific results.

  1. Your test kit will be delivered directly to your home.
  2. Collect your breath samples following the easy-to-follow instructions included with your kit.
  3. Return your samples
  4. Results are returned by email, including a comment from a GMC-registered GP and Functional Medicine Practitioner.
