What is histamine?

Histamine acts as a signalling chemical that is released from your immune system to communicate with your cells. It is most known for its role in the digestive system and causing allergic symptoms in response to foods or environmental triggers (pollen and mould are common environmental triggers). In this instance, histamine will be released by the white blood cells in response to the body’s perceived allergen. Histamine is stored mainly in mast cells but also found in basophils in the blood.

Histamine has other important roles in the body including regulating your sleep cycle, protecting against infection, cognitive function and communicating messages to the brain and nervous system, thus acting as a neurotransmitter.

What is histamine intolerance and why is it important?

Once created, histamine needs to be stored or broken down by the enzyme, diamine oxidase (DAO) in the gut and histamine-n-methyltransferase (HNMT) in the lungs and nervous system. The process of histamine degradation can be affected by genetic and environmental factors. In some cases can lead to histamine toxicity, with symptoms presenting similar to an allergic reaction.

Histamine intolerance develops when there is an imbalance between histamine released and the body’s ability to break this down.  Accumulated histamine in the body, quickly becomes toxic and leads to symptoms similar to allergic reactions.

What does the genetic histamine intolerance test do?

The genetic histamine intolerance test looks at the genes, nutrients, lifestyle and environmental factors that are involved in both the breakdown and removal of histamine. Focusing on where breakdowns in the cycle occur means that optimal function can be supported. It also looks at important cofactors of this cycle, such as vitamin B6.

Primarily when histamine intolerance is present, there is a breakdown in the DAO pathway, due to gastrointestinal issues or because of the intake of DAO inhibitors. For some, it will be genetic predisposition that exposes them to histamine intolerance.

HNMT controls the neurotransmitters activity of histamine in the brain and regulates the airways response, so important in conditions like asthma.

Understanding the genetic triggers of histamine intolerance means that some of the common triggers can be identified and a plan put in place for these, including:

  • Avoidance or reduction of DAO inhibitors such as, alcohol, tea, smoked or fermented foods
  • Reduction in medications that act as DAO inhibitors
  • Identification of digestive conditions that could be driving this
  • Implications of stress on the histamine pathways

Who would benefit most from the genetic histamine intolerance test?

If your histamine pathways are not working correctly then it can increase susceptibility to various health conditions. Symptoms can include:

Skin disorders – eczema, hives, itchiness and redness

Digestive – acid reflux, diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting

Respiratory – runny nose, nasal congestion, asthma, chronic cough or throat clearing, breathing difficulties

Neurological – anxiety, headaches, insomnia, memory and concentration problems and ADHD

Vascular – low blood pressure, fainting, dizziness, rapid heartbeat, headaches/migraines, oedema

What is being measured in the genetic histamine intolerance test?

The genetic histamine intolerance test assesses genes associated with the sub-cycles below:

Nervous System and Immune: HNMT, MAOB and NAT2
Methylation: MTHFR
Gastro Intestinal: ALDH2, DAO and GPX1

What will I get with the genetic histamine intolerance test results?

  1. Clearly illustrated and customized, color-coded genotype information .
  2. Descriptions elaborating on your gene functionality and the effects of SNP (Single Nucleotide Polymorphism).
  3. Clinically significant SNPs.
  4. Insights into nutrient and other epigenetic influences.
  5. A fully referenced report with links to research evidence.

What if I need help with the results of the genetic histamine intolerance test?

We have a team of functional medicine practitioners and registered nutritional therapists that we can refer you to help you with your results should you need any additional support. This is not included in the cost of the test.

What happens to my DNA after the genetic histamine intolerance test?

Each test is processed in an ISO certified UK laboratory and all samples are completely destroyed after 3 months. All client genotyping data is marked for destruction at 5 months and completely destroyed by 6 months.

The client report, the data and the DNA sample is never (and will never be) shared with, or sold to third parties. All of the data extraction and analysis is done in the UK.

At Smart Nutrition we pride ourselves in offering the best cost possible for the Genetic Histamine Intolerance test.

Buccal cheek swab.

Collecting your samples for the genetic histamine intolerance test is simple, it is a non invasive cheek swab and is suitable for all ages as long as a cheek swab can be collected.

You need to have a break from eating and drinking at least one hour before doing the genetic histamine intolerance test.

As the test is looking at genetic code, which is fixed, the test is not impacted by illness, infections, medication, the food you eat, or supplements you take. To avoid contamination of the sample, please abstain from eating/drinking for at least 1 hour before testing.

The genetic histamine intolerance test is available for anyone, including children, with the consent of a parent or guardian. When testing a child under 18, parental consent is required.

UK Orders

All UK orders for the genetic histamine intolerance test include return packaging and postage for return within the UK. The package can be put in a standard post box.
It can also be sent tracked or special delivery via a post office, the fee for this is not included.

Non UK Orders

The DNA test kit is declared as a value of £4 for customs purposes. The package may be subject to customs/ import duties, for which the recipient is liable and responsible to settle.
If kits are returned due to you not accepting fees or delivery, we are sorry but the order is not refundable.International orders return packaging is provided but it is NOT prepaid. You will need to arrange and pay for the return. For returns from Europe we recommend a tracked postal service. As samples are stable it is not necessary to choose an express service.
For Non UK orders please contact admin@smartnutriton.co.uk if your country is not available at the checkout.

Results for the genetic histamine intolerance test are available in 2.5 weeks.

Your genetic histamine intolerance test results will be emailed to you.

We are here to offer ongoing support as you progress through your health journey, regardless of your test results. Should you have any inquiries or require additional assistance we are happy to help you.

More information about the team of qualified functional medicine and registered Nutritional therapy practitioners that are ready to help you.

Olga Hamilton
Olga has been using DNA/genetics testing in her practice since 2015 to help her build personalised wellbeing and anti-ageing programmes. Genetic testing tells us how and where you are different from all other people, not just disease risks and predispositions, but also helps us tailor your diet and micronutrients. It is extremely helpful in personalising your diet and helps in prevention of genetic disorders.
