Genetic Hormone Test

Test your Hormone Genes and support any areas that are compromised.

What are hormones?

The body produces over 50 hormones in the body and these act as a signalling molecule that help to control and coordinate various processes including energy production, metabolism, reproduction, growth and development, response to factors such as injury, stress and the environment around us. These typically sit within the endocrine system, which is responsible for releasing these hormones.

Hormones are broadly split into three areas:

  • Steroid hormones – corticosteroids and sex steroids
  • Amines – these can be found in the Nervous System Report
  • Proteins and peptides

Why are our Steroid Hormones Important?

Steroid hormones are derived from cholesterol and includes testosterone, DHEA, ostrogen, progesterone and cortisol ( and their derivatives). They are then carried in the blood bound to specific carrier proteins. They are further broken down and metabolised in the liver, peripheral and target tissues. These hormones are then involved in the regulation of many physiological processes in both men and women including the reproductive system, metabolism, inflammation and the immune system.

Steroid hormone activity is influenced by both genetics, nutrition and environmental factors. This is managed by the Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Gonads/Adrenal pathway (HP-GA axis) with insufficiency or excess causing dysfunction tat directly effects how the hormones are synthesised, activated and metabolised.

Imbalances in steroid hormones can cause serious physical and mental health effects, that are detailed below.

What does the Genetic Hormone Test do?

The Genetic Hormone Test looks at your DNA to find tiny differences called SNPs, which can affect your body’s ability to metabolise hormones. The specific genes that this test looks at are related to the steroid hormones in addition to adrenaline, insulin and melatonin.

The Hormones test examines genes related to the regulation, synthesis, signalling, transport, and metabolism of corticosteroids and sex steroid hormones. It evaluates how genetic variants influence hormone imbalances and provides insights into the nutrients and environmental factors that can affect and improve hormone balance. This test is recommended for men and women experiencing symptoms of hormone imbalance.

The main hormones and pathways covered are split into three personalised pathways covering:

  • Steroid Hormones
  • Oestrogen Lifecycle
  • HPA and HPG Axis

This information guides strategies to address or work around any weaknesses or insufficiencies in the hormonal pathways.

Who would benefit most from the Genetic Hormone Test?

Imbalances in steroid hormones can cause serious physical and mental health effects. It can increase susceptibility to various health conditions including, but not an exhaustive list:

  • Fertility Issues
  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS),
  • Endometriosis
  • Hormonal imbalances and menstrual irregularities
  • Excess facial hair in females
  • Excess breast tissue in men Osteoporosis
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Acne
  • Mood swings
  • Weight gain
  • Sexual dysfunction and low libido
  • Poor memory
  • Hormone sensitive cancers such as breast and prostate cancer

What is being measured in the Genetic Hormone Test

The genetic hormone test assesses the following sub-categories of genes:

  3. Clinically significant SNPs.
  4. Insights into nutrient and other epigenetic influences.
  5. A fully referenced report with links to research evidence.

What if I need help with the results of the Genetic Hormone Test?

We have a team of functional medicine practitioners and registered nutritional therapists that we can refer you to help you with your results should you need any additional support. This is not included in the cost of the test.

What happens to my DNA after the Genetic Hormone Test?

Each test is processed in an ISO certified UK laboratory and all samples are completely destroyed after 3 months. All client genotyping data is marked for destruction at 5 months and completely destroyed by 6 months.

The client report, the data and the DNA sample is never (and will never be) shared with, or sold to third parties. All of the data extraction and analysis is done in the UK.

At Smart Nutrition we pride ourselves in offering the best cost possible for the Genetic Hormone test.

Buccal cheek swab.

Collecting your samples for the genetic hormone test is simple, it is a non invasive cheek swab and is suitable for all ages as long as a cheek swab can be collected.

You need to have a break from eating and drinking at least one hour before doing the genetic hormone test.

As the test is looking at genetic code, which is fixed, the test is not impacted by illness, infections, medication, the food you eat, or supplements you take. To avoid contamination of the sample, please abstain from eating/drinking for at least 1 hour before testing.

The genetic hormone test is available for anyone, including children, with the consent of a parent or guardian. When testing a child under 18, parental consent is required.

UK Orders

All UK orders for the genetic hormone test include return packaging and postage for return within the UK. The package can be put in a standard post box.
It can also be sent tracked or special delivery via a post office, the fee for this is not included.

Non UK Orders

The DNA test kit is declared as a value of £4 for customs purposes. The package may be subject to customs/ import duties, for which the recipient is liable and responsible to settle.
If kits are returned due to you not accepting fees or delivery, we are sorry but the order is not refundable.International orders return packaging is provided but it is NOT prepaid. You will need to arrange and pay for the return. For returns from Europe we recommend a tracked postal service. As samples are stable it is not necessary to choose an express service.
For Non UK orders please contact admin@smartnutriton.co.uk if your country is not available at the checkout.
